A Little Story About Our First Microwave and the Food We Made
It’s hard to believe it has been over 30 years since my wife an I purchased our very first microwave oven. We’d gone shopping at Sears and if I recall correctly I knew beforehand I was going to purchase one for her.
We did our shopping and then drifted over to the appliances and I mentioned we ought to buy a microwave oven. My wife was excited as she had really wanted a microwave but she wondered if we could afford one as we were newlyweds and all and microwaves were more expensive then than they are currently.
I told her we could afford it and she chose out a nice microwave and we somehow managed to get it into the trunk and drove home and set it up to see what different foods we could make in our new piece of cooking technology.
Like so many the very first thing we tried was to boil water and I still recall how amazed we were at how quick the water got hot.
Next up was a marshmallow because we had heard from somewhere that microwaving a marshmallowwould cause it to expand many times its size. Of course we were not disappointed and spent the next 10 or 15 minutes “cooking” marshmallows.
That evening came the big attempt, we were actually going to cook a meal in our microwave and we were going to make frozen breaded fish fillets we had in our freezer.
Since this was way before the helpful microwave instructions on the side of the box we had to use the skimpy instruction manual and our gut instincts.
We nuked the fish for a couple of minutes and then checked them. We didn’t feel that it could possibly be done so fast so we cooked them some more for a few more minutes.
We felt they had to be done now and we sat down to eat but after trying to cut the fish with just a fork knew we had needed a couple of serrated knives if we were going to eat the fish.
Well, that fish was so hard as we had way overcooked it but we sat there smiling and ate every last bite of it as we had cooked our very first meal in or new microwave oven.
Soon after we bought a set of microwave cookbooks and my wife even took a few microwave cooking classes at our local community college and before long we were cooking the majority of our food in our microwave oven and still do so to this day.
Years went by and even though our trusty old Sears microwave oven still worked just fine we decided to buy an Amana Radar Range because we read that they were the top of the line so we sold our Sears to my mother-in-law for very little and bought us a new Amana oven that we used until lightening ruined it.
We are now on our third microwave now but I’ve got our next oven picked out a Stainless Steel Microwave Ovens more specifically a Panasonic Stainless Microwave. We have a number of Panasonic products and that particular oven is very highly rated and has a nice modern look to it.
And what about the old Sears oven? Well, she used it every day until just a few years ago when it finally stopped working. Talk about getting one’s money’s worth, that oven lasted over 25 years!
